THE INVISIBLE IRAQIS
Rent has skyrocketed in many places, and Jennifer
Utz, who runs the phenomenal and heartbreaking website
Iraqi Refugee Stories (www.iraqirefugeestories.org),
writes at AlterNet (Nov. 15, 2008) that “Iraqi refugees
are taken advantage of by just about every crooked landlord who
realizes how desperately they don’t want to be sent back—war
profiteering on a new level.”

From Baghdad to Brooklyn: My Journey with an Iraqi Refugee
by Jennifer Utz
That one sounds like mortar fire,” Mohamed said. “And
that was definitely a sniper.” My Iraqi friend and I were
at Coney Island for the summer fireworks. As we rode the Wonder
Wheel and listening to the explosions over the water, memories
of life in war-torn Iraq inevitably came to mind. Just two weeks
before, Mohamed had been a refugee living in the slums of Damascus,
Syria.

Since
the 2001 U.S. invasion of Iraq, over 4 million Iraqis have fled
their homes, becoming internally displaced or seeking refuge
in neighboring countries such as Syria and Jordan. On the website,
Iraqi Refugees Stories, videojournalist Jennifer Utz is attempting

Ready,
Aim, Shoot: By Jennifer Utz
It’s
7:00 a.m. in India. The temperature is approaching 113 degrees.
I’m the only Westerner in a tightly-packed jeep, swerving
in and out of every one of the four lanes of this frantic highway
— dodging buses, trucks, cars, rickshaws, cyclists, pedestrians,
shepherds, cows, goats, and the occasional camel-drawn goods
carriage. Apart from the heat, I would normally find this type
of situation exhilarating. But, right now, I’m disturbed
by the awkward quiet of my fellow passengers....
